KnowHow2Go and HYPE's H.O.P.E.

Young people in all socio-economic groups have college aspirations. In fact, eight out of 10 expect to attain a bachelor’s degree or higher, according to the U.S. Department of Education. But despite their aspirations, low-income students and those who are the first in their families to pursue higher education are severely underrepresented on college campuses. Studies show these students often lack the guidance they need to prepare for post secondary education.

In order to turn these students' college dreams into action-oriented goals, the American Council on Education, Lumina Foundation for Education and the Ad Council launched the KnowHow2GO campaign in January 2007. This multi year, multimedia effort includes television, radio and outdoor public service advertisements (PSAs) that encourage 8th through 10th graders to prepare for college using four simple steps.

KnowHow2Go is a national initiative to help low-income, first-generation students—students whose parents have not earned a college degree—take four important steps that will help them go to college.

The Four Steps to College:

1. Be a pain – Let everyone know that you’re going to college and need their help.
2. Push yourself – Working a little harder today will make getting into college even easier.
3.Find the right fit – Find out what kind of school is the best match for you and your career goals.
4.Put your hands on some cash - If you think you can't afford college, think again. There's lots of aid out there.

HYPE launched the Hispanic Outreach for Post-secondary Education (HOPE)initiative, which is designed to reach out and mentor families and students in an effort to promote college-going culture through emphasizing the importance of post-secondary education.
In order to better serve the community HYPE's H.O.P.E. joined forces with KnowHow2GOFlorida, and became a "Local College Access Site to work with youth and families and ensuring middle school and high school students obtain the help and information they need to prepare for college.

HYPE's H.O.P.E. targets students in Hillsborough County enrolled in the ELL/ESOL program in the grade range of 8th through 12th. The goal is to mentor and educate their families on the process of college preparation and ensuring ESOL students in the Tampa Bay Area can connect with the powerful message of the KnowHow2Go campaign. Members of HYPE host presentations and lead outreach events designed to introduce the steps of how to get to college and succeed to middle and high school students.

Information includes SAT/ACT requirements, classes students should take that will better prepare them for college, information regarding Honors, IB, AP courses and information on how to obtain financial assistance and scholarships to pay for college.
